   Building Season

Bible and Cross

The building season is almost here! The building stayed dry throughout the Winter months, praise God, and we have begun getting bids for certain tasks that need to be accomplished. Please pray for us as we move forward with construction this Summer.

More importantly building the Church body here is also moving forward. God has blessed us with several new members, renewed interest in Bible studies, and a general excitement about spiritual things here on the mountain. It is a great joy to see and experience.

Our “Names of God” series of sermons is past the mid-way point now. Sometime after Easter we will be examining the Book of Acts. This book of the Bible describes what a church in New Testament times looked like, acted like, and believed like. It should be an interesting time as we apply lessons from Acts to the life and times of Duck Creek Community Church.

God bless you all.

Gearing Up For
Spring & Summer 2008

Carpenter Hammer

I read a book recently which asked some provocative questions two of which I will rephrase here, What on earth have you done? And, another like it, What in God’s name have you been doing?

Here is opportunity!

Duck Creek Community Church NEEDS YOU this summer. We need help with finished carpentry and trimming out windows, doors, etc; oiling interior doors (no skill required); painting; sweeping (no skill required); clean-up (no skill required); putting in a T&G floor in sanctuary; building the front stairs; putting hardware on doors; finished electrical (and putting in light bulbs); finished plumbing (and installing fixtures); ground maintenance (moving dirt, making walkways and a half circle drive). We also plan to construct the steeple this year – it will be built in two parts (on the ground) and then put in place using a crane. This will require both rough and finished carpentry skills. Or possibly just a willing heart.

As you see, there are jobs for everyone, some that require some skill many that do not require anything but an agreeable person. So then begs the question: “What in God’s name are you doing?” Do take the challenge. Work with us to accomplish the extraordinary this summer.

Give Bonnie a call at the church office, (435) 682-3222, to be put on our list of summer volunteers!!

May God’s Grace be with you. May God richly bless all of you who have given so generously of
yourselves, your finances and your prayers to establish His church here in Duck Creek Village.

Missions Outreach

by Cathy Woodard

Duck Creek Community Church gives support to several missionaries serving in various fields and countries. One such missionary couple are Tim and Louise Carey who have served with Wycliffe Bible Translators for 29 years.

In 1980 they were sent to Guatemala and assigned to learn the Cakchiquel language, a Mayan Indian tongue of the Central Highlands area of the country. Over the years, they have participated in the translation work of the New Testament in several different Cakchiquel dialects as well as helping with literacy teaching needed so there are readers of the translations produced.

The Careys are currently in the United States on a furlough, however, Tim recently spent a month (January 7-February 7) in Guatemala doing some checking work on one of the translations. While there, he sent us this story.

“Some months ago, a dear Christian brother in California passed away and memorial funds were sent to us to distribute for school children. This afternoon I took scholarship money out to a village for two kids in an Indian family. The kids mother (Lucrecia) had previously worked for us as a maid for 10 years. She and her husband are dirt poor-he earns something like Q1300 a month working 5 days a week janitoring at the public university here in town. They have 6 children and I have no idea how they are making it through life. After I gave them the money (Q2850) which covers the schooling costs for the two oldest, Lucrecia told me that earlier in the week their 4th grade child had dreamed that my wife, Louise, was in town and giving hugs to everyone. Lucrecia told him that we Careys were in the US for an entire year, and it couldn’t be possible.

In spite of their poverty, they signed up the two oldest children for school (up through 6th grade is free, but after that one must pay). Lucrecia pondered how it was they were going to pay for the schooling, and she resolved in her heart to try to get more work (she works 3 days a week as a maid). By about Friday of this week worry began to set in, but she determined in her heart to put it in God’s hands whenever she realized she was worrying. On Saturday a preacher from the next town spoke in their church as a special speaker. He said that workers in the church needed to be enthusiastic and not just do half-hearted work for the Lord. The message so touched her heart, that she did something she’s never done before the next day, today, Sunday, she gave an offering of Q10, which she desperately needed for feeding the family. She reminded the Lord of her need to earn money for the kids’ schooling, and gave her gift in faith he would provide.

You can imagine the joy and welling of emotion in her and in me when she related this story to me. What appreciation I have for God who arranges these things! And though I’m not Louise, you can bet there were hugs all around! Blessings, Tim”

FYI: $1 = Q7.50

What an answer to prayer that was for Lucretia. We serve a great God!

Note: Louise Carey has agreed to be our speaker for the upcoming Women’s Retreat scheduled for June 6-7. We look forward to meeting her.

Sunny Phone

We are in the process of developing two phone chain lists. One list will be for emergency situations on the mountain such as loss of power, snow storms that prevent us from leaving the mountain, fires, road closures, etc. This list is being developed so we can check on and support one another in these types of situations. The second list is for prayer in severe or life threatening situations, surgery, and illness, emotional or mental distress for you or immediate family members.

What is a phone chain you may ask? A lead person is contacted about emergencies or prayer needs, this person contacts the first person on the phone list, the first person contacts the second and so on to the end of the list. All members will have a total list of phone chain members for prayer and/or emergency, depending on which list you want to participate. As part of a phone chain, you are responsible to continue calling members of the chain until you reach the next person. You may leave voice mail messages, but you need to keep on calling until you actually talk with a person who can then continue the phone chain. Simply leaving a voice mail message may result in a severe slow down or even a break down of the chain.

Sign up on the prayer list also requires you pray privately or together on the phone for the request. Jesus tells us in Matthew 18:19-20, “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” (Even on the phone.) Lest you fear this is a time for gossip that is not the intent. Prayer is powerful and can lead to healing, peace, joy, support, and direction to name only a few benefits. When signing up for the Prayer Chain, keep in mind that the requests are confidential and not to be discussed other than to pray yourself and with others on the Prayer Chain.

If you are interested in being a part of the Emergency Call Chain or the Prayer Chain, please sign up on the list located on the refreshment table. You may sign up for one or the other or both. You may also contact Karen Garrison to have your name placed on the list.

Thank you for your willingness to serve the Lord in this way. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Garrison at (435) 682-3421.

S.O.A.P.

Pastor Steve has been instructing and encouraging us the past 6 weeks to use S.O.A.P. Now before you get offended, we’re not talking about your personal hygiene. We’re talking about an effective way to study scripture and apply what we learn to our daily lives. S.O.A.P. is an acronym for:

Scripture

Observation

Application

Prayer

A journal of any sort will be needed to use this technique of Bible study.

SCRIPTURE: After reading a passage of scripture, write down the main scripture or the portion that speaks to you.

OBSERVATION: Write what you see in the scripture, what it says to you.

APPLICATION: Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.

PRAYER: Write out your prayer.

This type of Bible study and journaling is designed to serve you in your growth with Christ. You can be flexible in how you use it, but be sure to develop a healthy habit of spending time daily with the Lord.
